"Amusing the Million" was assigned reading for a history class, and I was very pleasantly surprised at what a great balance this book is between fun, casual reading and interesting, thought-provoking analysis.If you want to do some light reading about Coney Island and feel like you’re stepping into the world of a sepia postcard for a bit, kick back and enjoy. If you want to (or have to) read for deeper analysis, there is plenty to pull out of all the social engineering and advertising that went into making amusement parks such a success and staple of modern American vacation (and what didn’t). The book is well-written and feels smart (I picked up a short list of interesting new words), without being dense or bogged down in numbing detail. It contains some fantastic descriptions of the attractions of the times preceding, during, and after the Coney Island heyday interspersed with some excellently atmospheric old photographs.I love reading in my spare time, but I’m often wary of assigned reading because of how dry and outdated it can feel. What surprised me most about “Amusing the Million” was the insight into the psychology of American entertainment— sure things have changed, but not as much as most of us might think. Some of the analyses by the businessmen, psychologists, artists, and social critics of the time were scarily insightful, definitely applicable today, and left me thinking about it for weeks afterward-- probably my favorite part of the book!So the long and short of it: if you want to pick up this book for leisure reading, you have a treat ahead of you. If you have to read it, you’re in luck to have such interesting assigned reading.
